Hardscaping & Outdoor Construction in Auckland

Hardscaping & Outdoor Construction

AGJ Construction builds substantial outdoor structures designed to integrate properly with your home, your site and the landscape. Boardwalks, outdoor steps, decking and built landscape elements, constructed to last.

What Is Hardscaping?

The Built Elements of Your Outdoors

Hardscaping is the constructed, built part of an outdoor environment, as distinct from planting and soft landscaping. Where landscaping is about the living and planted elements, hardscaping is about the structures and hard-wearing construction that form the frame of your outdoor space.

AGJ is a builder, not a gardening or landscape-maintenance company. Our focus is the residential outdoor structures where proper construction, detailing and durability genuinely matter, the projects that need a builder's knowledge to get right.

Decks & Decking

Timber decks and structural decking, out of the frame of the Decks & Outdoor Living service.

Boardwalks & Walkways

Raised timber walkways that provide access and movement through a site.

Outdoor Steps & Level Changes

Constructed steps for sloping ground and changes in level.

Retaining & Built Elements

Retaining and built landscape features that manage and shape the land.

Built For The Site

Outdoor Construction Isn't Just About How It Looks

A deck or boardwalk that looks good in a photo needs to perform across changing ground, weather and years of use. Getting that right is what separates proper construction from purely cosmetic landscaping.

Sloping Sites & Level Changes

Handling the fall of the land with steps, level runs and a consistent structure.

Substructure & Set-Out

Bearers, joists and alignment set properly before any surface goes on.

Around Existing Vegetation

Working with established trees and planting rather than clearing everything away.

Connections to the Home

Weathertight, clean junctions where outdoor structures meet the house.

Durability & Materials

Materials and fixings chosen to perform in exposed outdoor conditions.

Consent & Compliance

The right permissions and structural requirements for the scale of the project.

Depending on the nature and scale of the work, a project may require engineering, consent or building-compliance input, or it may not. We assess requirements project-specific and let you know what actually applies, rather than assuming.

Featured Project

A Substantial Boardwalk on Waiheke Island

A long timber boardwalk, staircase and coastal viewing platform built by AGJ Construction on a steep Waiheke Island property, descending from the home, through the native coastal vegetation, down to a finished platform at the rocks.

Finished timber boardwalk leading down to the turquoise sea on Waiheke Island, with coastal vegetation and rocky islands in view

The project is a genuine piece of landscape construction. It gives a clifftop Waiheke property a finished, usable way down from the home to the shoreline, handling a significant change in level with intermediate stairs, level runs and a wedge-shaped viewing platform at the rocks, all built into the existing terrain and around the established pōhutukawa.

During Construction

Finished Result

Finished wedge-shaped timber viewing platform at the rocks on Waiheke Island, at sunset over the bay

Beneath the finished surface is real structure: a timber substructure set out across the natural fall of the ground, stair stringers laid into the slope, and junctions detailed where the path turns. This is the difference between professional outdoor construction and a surface-level finish.

Substantial timber or built walkways designed to provide access and movement through a residential site, over sloping ground, changes in level and existing vegetation.

Outdoor Steps & Level Changes

Constructed solutions for properties with changing ground levels or sloping terrain, built in as part of the wider landscape.

Decking & Outdoor Structures

Timber decks and structural decking, coordinated with the Decks & Outdoor Living service for the full outdoor picture.

Retaining & Built Landscape Elements

Retaining and built features that manage the land and hold a sloping site in place, constructed properly.

Connections Between Areas

Finished, usable routes that tie different parts of a property together, from the house down to the garden or the water.

Custom Outdoor Construction

Unusual residential outdoor projects that don't fit a standard category, built to suit the site and the way you want to use it.

Hardscaping & Decks

How This Differs From Decks & Outdoor Living

The Decks & Outdoor Living service is about the residential deck: timber decks, entertaining areas, indoor-outdoor living and deck extensions off the home.

Hardscaping is the broader category. It covers the built structural and landscape elements that don't sit neatly in that box: boardwalks, raised walkways, outdoor steps, retaining and construction across challenging terrain.

Many projects draw on both, where a deck steps down over a slope into a boardwalk that crosses to the garden. We handle them together, scoped as one coherent job.

Waiheke Island

Residential & Outdoor Construction on Waiheke

AGJ undertakes residential building and outdoor construction work on Waiheke Island. Delivering to the island brings its own logistics: materials, trades and waste planned around the ferry and barge. But the standard of workmanship doesn't change with the location.

  • Genuine completed outdoor construction on the island, including a substantial boardwalk and hardscaping project
  • Working with a site's established vegetation, slope and coastal conditions rather than against them
  • Materials and deliveries planned around the ferry and barge schedule
  • Substantial structures built to perform in exposed coastal conditions
  • The same level of work and the same single point of contact as our Auckland projects
FAQ

Hardscaping Questions

What is hardscaping?

Hardscaping is the constructed, built element of an outdoor environment — structures such as decks, boardwalks, steps, walkways, retaining and built landscape features — as distinct from soft landscaping and planting.

What's the difference between hardscaping and landscaping?

Landscaping generally refers to the soft, living and planted elements of an outdoor space. Hardscaping is the built, structural and durable construction — the decks, paths, steps, retaining and structures that form the frame of the outdoor environment.

Can you build boardwalks and raised walkways?

Yes. AGJ builds timber boardwalks and raised walkways that provide access and movement through residential sites, including over sloping ground and changes in level. Our Waiheke Island boardwalk project is a completed example.

Can you undertake outdoor construction on sloping sites?

Yes. A large part of our outdoor work involves sloping and challenging sites — handling changes in level with steps, level runs, retaining and properly engineered substructure.

Do hardscaping projects require building consent?

Consent requirements depend on the type, height, scale and structural nature of the work. Requirements should be assessed project-specific rather than assumed, and we'll flag what applies to your particular project.

Do you undertake hardscaping on Waiheke Island?

Yes. AGJ has completed residential outdoor construction on Waiheke Island, including a substantial boardwalk and hardscaping project, with the same standard of workmanship as our Auckland builds.

Can hardscaping be included within a larger renovation?

Yes. Hardscaping and outdoor construction often sit alongside decks, outdoor living and broader renovation projects, and we can scope it as part of the overall job.

How do we start a hardscaping project with AGJ Construction?

The first step is a conversation about your site and what you're planning. We'll discuss the project, come out to look at the site, and take it from there with honest guidance.
